Description
A very rare and one of a kind item indeed. This is an actual photographic image of the Cragganmore Distillery's founder, John Smith, and his men. Judging from the information on the barrel, this photo may have been taken in 1885 or 1886. John Smith died in 1886 so this may very well be among the last photos of the few taken of him - if not the last itself. This is not a photocopy of any sort. It is a genuine photograph that's been mounted on a backing board of some sort. I'm sure you notice the stains and age marks that have developed across the years. I purchased this item from a previous eBay auction about 6-8 years ago and have had it stored in the protective sleeve it came in. You'll see it in the fourth photograph of the included image.
John Smith is seen sharing a sample of the barrel to a man who may have been the Excise Officer stationed at the distillery. Smith was a big man with a big reputation in his day. He founded and constructed Cragganmore in 1869 and ran it with his family until his death in 1886.
As mentioned, I've had this in my collection for several years but with no way to properly display it, the photo has remained stored in one of my albums nearly the entire time. I'd like this to move on to a home that can appreciate it and put it on proper display.
The photo and backing are approximately 6.75" x 4.25". Other than its obvious signs of age, there are no rips, tears or other defects.
