Antique Match Safe from the St. Louis 1904 World Fair. This match safe commemorates the 1904 St. Louis World Fair also called the "The Louisiana Purchase Exposition"
The official flag of the world’s fair had the fleur-de-lis symbolical of France, the country that transferred the Territory to the United States. It is also engraved behind with, “Official Flag St.Louise 1904.” The three colors in the flag represented the three countries that held the Louisiana Territory at one time or another, Spain, France and the U.S. The red, white, yellow and blue enameling is still recognizable. There are 14 raised dots around the Fleur-de-lis symbol representing the 14 states of the U.S. at the time of the purchase. The figure to the left of the flag is an American Indian holding a shield and a bow, behind him is a canoe and tepees. A sheaf of arrows, and a tomahawk are on the ground. The female figure on the right represents " Progress". She is holding an artist palette, brush, and is surrounded by a train, tools, bales of cotton, and a wheel. The case measures 2 1/2" X 1 3/4“ X 3/8" high. There are match striking ridges on two sides. Inside the lid cover is stamped "Pat. Apl'd. For." There is also what appears to be a celluloid type panel inside under the stamped patent pending - that might have once had a photo or something else. The case might be brass but has a silver plating. The cover panel has exceptional detailing.It is also in remarkable condition. I only found a few photos online of other match safes from the 1904 World’s Fair Exposition.
