    Description

This is an extraordinarily rare coin, one of the few "five star" varieties discussed in Richard Snow's Indian Cent Attribution Guide. The major con of this coin is that it is a dark and corroded example. On the other hand, the level of detail is that of a nearly uncirculated coin and one can see the doubled LIBERTY very clearly. Rare indeed with this level of detail. Moreover, this is a "Closed 3" variety of the 1873 cent -- all S-1 Doubled LIBERTY coins are also Closed 3s.
Note that ANACS practices net grading, meaning that they will assign a numeric grade even though the coin has a details qualifier. Their assessment that the coin is an AU-58 is consistent with the coin being in a higher AU grade, despite the corrosion.
