Up For Sale Is 1 (One) 1863 Civil War Era Copper-Nickel Indian Head Cent And 1 (One) 1944 WWII Jefferson Silver War Nickel.
The Indian Head Penny also sometimes referred to as the Indian Head Cent by collectors is a copper-nickel coin that preceded the Wheat Penny and Lincoln Penny. Years minted 1859-1863. The front (obverse) of the coin contains the head of Lady Liberty wearing a chieftains headdress sometimes referred to as a war bonnet. The rear (reverse) contains a wreath and the words one cent as well as a shield on the top middle, except for the 1859 has no shield.
The Jefferson nickel standard composition continued until 1942 when a critical shortage of the metal nickel (owing to World War II) forced the United States Mint to change the composition of the strikes to instead contain 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese, thus resulting in "wartime" Jefferson Silver Nickel. Silver continued to be used in the coins through 1945 when the end of the war alleviated metal shortages and the US Mint returned to their pre-war standard composition.
